I have discovered a new guilty pleasure, Cassandra Clare. Although this author's first novel, City of Bones, was published in 2007 I have only recently discovered her two unforgettable series. Ms. Clare is best known for her "Mortal Instruments" series. Beginning with City of Bones, Mortal Instruments contains four published young adult novels and one that is soon to be released. I am currently reading this series and will publish a review in the coming weeks.
The series that has me sitting on the edge of my seat and begging for more is the prequel series, Infernal Devices. So far this series only contains 2 novels, Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince, but with its backdrop of Victorian England these novels really draw the reader into the world of the Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are the offspring of angels and humans who protect the world from Downworlders. These novels which contain everything a paranormal reader could possibly want draw you in to a time that you never could have possibly imagined while still keeping the story believable. I was amazed how Clare combined the worlds of angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, fairies, warlocks and humans while still keeping the story alive and fluid. And that is especially important, because even a fantasy story can be taken out of hand if it is not written with care.
The story's main characters are so lovable that no matter what happens throughout the story you find yourself feeling for them. I found myself so wrapped up in their lives that when the book upset me or made me sad, I had to set it down and remind myself that these characters are fictional. The love triangle between the story's three main characters Will, Jem, and Tessa, can be understood and heart wrenching for any age group. The other characters subplots wrap themselves effortlessly with the three main characters.
Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince are some of the best novels I have read in a long time. They can be beloved by all age groups. I believe that is Cassandra Clare keeps writing her novels as well as she has been, these novels can stay notable for a long, long time.
As a side note, according to Cassandra Clare's website, there have been talks to make a City of Bones movie. Nothing is certain however, but fingers crossed!
